1. The Wave

The Wave is a dramatic wave-like formation of sand and stone, situated in the northern part of the U.S. state of Arizona. The Wave sandstone is quite soft, so tourists are required to walk carefully in order not to break its small ridges. Heavy rain storms can create in the Wave numerous pools, containing tadpoles and fairy shrimp. Such pools can stay there for several days.

Antelope Canyon2. Antelope Canyon

It’s located in Navajo Land, Arizona. Actually there are two Antelope Canyons: an upper one and a more challenging lower one. It’s a unique geological formation, small, but elegantly gorgeous. This canyon is considered to be a spiritual place by the Navajo people. That’s why guides are mostly Indian people too, tourists are expected to treat the place with quiet reverence.

3.      Great Blue Hole

Another natural wonder is just 50 miles off the coast of Belize. Some people believe that the Great Blue Hole is the largest sea-hole in the world. It has almost perfect circular shape, it was formed by a collapse of the roof of a limestone cave system when the sea level rose during the last ice age. The Great Blue Hole is a popular destination among divers all over the world.

4.      Blue Lake Cave

Another natural geological sight in Brazil is the famous Blue Lake Cave, located near town of Bonito. This cave is perhaps the most spectacular among the numerous caves with underground lakes in the southern region of Brazil. The water here is astonishingly clear blue due to high content of magnesium and the interplay of light beams through the hole in the cave’s ceiling. The lake is thought to be about two hundred feet deep.

5.      Crystal Cave of the Giants

The cave is located in a mining at Chihuahua in Mexico. In the cave there are giant selenite crystals that are believed to be the largest natural crystals in the world. The cave is extremely hot, the heat reaches 58°C and without protection it’s difficult to stay there more than for 10 minutes, that’s why it is still relatively unexplored.

6.      Giant’s Causeway

The Giant Causeway is an area of mostly hexagonal basalt columns, located on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. The columns’ tops form stepping stones, which disappear deep under the sea. The sight was caused by a volcanic eruption, and now it’s called the fourth greatest natural wonder of the United Kingdom.

7.      Hell Gate

This geological wonder is partly man-made. It appeared as a result of drilling the soil for gas with heavy equipment. Under the surface there was a large gap, and the roof of the gap collapsed and buried all the equipment, creating a large pit filled with poisonous gas. In order not to let the poisonous gas come out of the pit, geologists ignited it. This fire pit is about two times of a football field large and 30 meters deep, and it’s burning for more than 30 years already.

8.      Chocolate Hills

Chocolate Hills are situated in Bohol, Philippines, and are not made of chocolate but just look like at the end of the dry season, when normally green grass turns chocolate brown. It’s really hard to believe they are not man-made artifacts, because they are uniform in shape and look like giant mole hills. The legend tells a story of two giants, who threw sand and stones at each other fighting. Their fight lasted for days, but finally they made friends and left place, leaving all the mess behind.

9.      Eye of the Sahara

This spectacular geological formation is also called Richat Structure and is located near Ouadane in west-central Mauritania. This outstanding circular formation is up to 50 km in diameter and looks like a gigantic bull’s eye. Initially it was thought to be an asteroid impact structure. But the concentric circles of the structure are layers of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks, which were pushed upward to form a giant geologic dome.
